Exotic dance as a career choice is booming in the poor economy. Why are so many girls making these choices? What do their parents say?

Are parents aware that today's teens are finding more and more interest in the exotic dance area? Are the family members disconnected so much so that parents are not aware of their daughters' dancing?

Beauty is What Exotic Dancing is all About

Being young and looking younger is what exotic dancing is all about. The more the men have favorite girls, the more money the dancers make, and the more stable are their jobs. The work is highly competitive. Beauty is the game. And, the girls learn how to play it.

Strippers Encourage Women Customers to Try Dancing

Many girls come to dance because they were lured in by other dancers when they were in the clubs for drinks. "Besides dancing," said one manager,* "the girls are required to sell drinks and encourage [female] visitors to dance 'just for the fun of it because it feels great.' This is how we get new girls." The teens who begin working at the clubs may have girlfriends who work in the clubs. They could have false IDs. Do parents have any ideas of what pushes their daughters over the edge to walk in the door of the clubs?

What Really is Behind the Closed Doors of Strip Clubs...

Common knowledge among dancers* has it that some strip clubs become attractions for drug distribution and use. It is not unusual that some dancers suffer physical abuse and still others die from drug problems. According to the manager* of a city club, many of these young girls could be in the United States illegally, and a percentage of dancers are college students. He believes the dancers are most generally enrolled in the nursing, biology, medicine, and business fields.

"Future teachers," he said, "don't get involved because they get found out somehow." Usually the students plan to work the clubs for three years and then leave the profession to go on to their medical or business careers. Unlike the dancers with less formal education, college students generally don’t get involved in the shortcomings and life of the nightclubs. They complete their shifts, take their earnings, and go home to study. Nobody really knows that these students worked as strippers.

Getting a New Job after Being a Lap Dancer isn't Easy

The older seasoned dancers usually have worked in the field for twenty years. When they decide to stop exploiting their bodies in their thirties, these women find they have no specialized career skills. Many of them quit school at an early age and know only how to seduce and display their bodies for the pleasures of men. They have no idea what their educational potentials are since, most likely, the girls quit school at a young age. It is difficult for former dancers to interview for new careers. It is not easy to discuss work skills and not mention dancing for twenty years. Potential employers may believe that former dancers use poor judgment. That issue may be a drawback for securing some jobs.

The Sizzling Reality of Exotic Dancing as a Career

Exotic dancers generally have a circle of friends who share similar interests. Many, especially those who dance in rural areas, lack some working skills and education. Some are aging, committed dancers who have become secret friends and have worked in the same clubs together while on the road looking for openings at new venues. These co-workers present the same dilemmas, thus the dancers enter a bottomless pit of spiraling self-destruction.

The author believes that within the exotic dancing world, friends are few since competition is high. One stripper* mentioned that the girls know that friendships can mean being booted out with no notice and nowhere to go, with no money coming in. The cycle continues; destitution is on the horizon. A few, according to a dancer,* get into peep shows, or zone out on drugs to avoid reality, or end up on the streets as prostitutes. . . .

If parents learned their teen daughters were strippers, would they discourage the girls from working in gentlemen's clubs and offer assistance to find work elsewhere? But, if the girls are 18, they would be working legally. There are many issues on the topic of teens entering the exotic dance field. Parents must open communication between their children and themselves. With no communication little can be accomplished.
